Refine Topic Results with Filters

Narrow your Topic results to find specific coverage, analyze trends, and focus on the mentions that matter most.

Once your Topic begins collecting coverage, you can use filters to narrow your results without changing your Topic search criteria. Filters help you quickly find specific mentions, compare coverage, and prepare reports while keeping your original Topic intact.

Note: Filters only affect your current view. They do not permanently change your Topic or remove mentions from your results.

🔹 When Should I Use Filters?

Filters help you temporarily narrow your Topic results without changing your Topic itself.

Common reasons to use filters include:

  • finding a specific article

  • focusing on one publication or journalist

  • reviewing a particular date range

  • narrowing results for reporting

  • hiding similar online articles

Filters only affect your current view and do not permanently change your Topic.

🔹 Open the Filters Panel

To access all available filters:

  1. Open your Topic Results.

  2. Click the Filter icon beside the keyword search field.

The Filters panel opens on the left, where you can apply one or more filters at the same time.

🔹 Find Specific Coverage

Use these filters when you're looking for a particular article, journalist, publication, or topic.

Filter by Date

By default, Agility displays mentions from the last 24 hours.

To change the date range:

  1. Click the Calendar icon.

  2. Choose one of the preset ranges:

    • Last 24 Hours

    • Last 3 Days

    • Last 7 Days

    • Last 30 Days

  3. Or select Custom to define your own date range.

Filter by Keywords

Keyword filters help you narrow the results already returned by your Topic.

This is especially useful when your Topic monitors multiple brands, products, campaigns, or themes.

Simple Keyword Search

  1. Select Keywords in the Filters panel.

  2. Enter a word or phrase.

  3. Click Apply.

Boolean logic (OR / AND / NOT)

Use Boolean operators for more advanced filtering inside your results.

Example search intent:

Discover OR Defender, but NOT Sport, and must include Land Rover

In Keywords:

  • OR – any of these words

  • AND – must include

  • NOT – must exclude

Add your keywords, then click Apply to return only the most relevant clips.

Tip: Keyword filters only narrow the results already returned by your Topic. They do not change your Topic search or retrieve additional coverage.

Filter by Keyword Position

You can also specify where the keyword appears within an article:

  • Headline

  • Lead Paragraph

  • Body

For example, you could show only mentions where PR CoPilot appears in the headline or opening paragraph.

Filter by Author or Outlet

Use these filters to identify which journalists or publications are driving your coverage.

Lists are automatically sorted by the number of matching mentions.

Simply select one or more authors or outlets and click Apply.

Note: This filters your existing results only. It does not search Agility for additional coverage by that author or publication.

🔹 Analyze Your Coverage

These filters help you evaluate the quality, reach, and characteristics of your coverage.

Filter by Impressions and AVE

Focus on coverage based on its potential reach or advertising value.

You can specify minimum and maximum values for:

  • Impressions – estimated audience size

  • AVE – Advertising Value Equivalency

This is useful when reviewing high-impact or high-value coverage.

Filter by Sentiment, Media Type, Geography, and Language

Further refine your results using:

  • Sentiment (available in 25 languages)

  • Media Type (Online, Print, Broadcast, Social)

  • Country

  • Province/State

  • Language

You can combine these filters to create highly targeted result sets.

🔹 Reduce Duplicate Results

Group Similar Articles

Many online publications syndicate or republish the same story.

Use the Similar filter to group near-identical online articles together.

  1. Select Similar in the Filters panel.

  2. Turn Group on.

  3. Click Apply.

  4. Select Hide to display only the newest version of each grouped article.

Note: Similar grouping is available only for online content.

Why am I still seeing duplicate articles?

Some online articles cannot be grouped as similar, for example when:

  • they have substantially different headlines,

  • the content has been significantly changed,

  • different providers supply different versions.

In these cases, the mentions remain separate.

Filter by Hashtags

The Hashtags filter displays hashtags found within your current results.

Use it to:

  • identify trending hashtags

  • review campaign performance

  • analyze social media conversations

Filter by Domain Authority

Filter online coverage using Moz Domain Authority (DA) scores to focus on websites with higher or lower authority.

Domain Authority scores range from 1–100.

For more information, see What is Domain Authority?

🔹 Lock, Unlock, or Clear Filters

After applying filters, use the Wrench menu to manage them.

You can:

  • Lock Filters to keep them active while switching Topics or moving between Results and Topic Setup

  • Unlock Filters to return to normal navigation

  • Clear All Filters to remove every active filter at once

🔹 Best Practices

  • Combine multiple filters to narrow your results more effectively.

  • Use keyword filters to focus on specific brands, campaigns, or products within a Topic.

  • Group similar articles before exporting or reporting on online coverage.

  • Lock filters when comparing multiple Topics using the same criteria.

  • Remember that filters only refine existing Topic results—they do not retrieve additional coverage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do filters change my Topic?

No.

Filters only affect your current view of the results. Your Topic search criteria remain unchanged.

Can I save my filters?

Filters can remain active while you switch between Topics or move between Results and Topic Setup.

Use the Wrench menu to lock or unlock your filters.

Can I delete an article from my Topic?

No.

Topic results display every mention that matches your Topic search criteria.

If you don't want to include a mention in your reporting, save only the relevant coverage to a folder in Saved Coverage.

If you're seeing duplicate online articles, use the Similar filter to group or hide them.

Why can't I find an article using filters?

Filters only narrow the results already returned by your Topic.

If an article doesn't appear before filters are applied:

  • Review your Topic search criteria.

  • Search for the article manually.

  • If you expected Agility to capture it automatically, contact Support for assistance.

See Create or Import Manual Mentions for more information.

Can I combine multiple filters?

Yes.

Most filters can be used together, allowing you to create highly specific result sets based on criteria such as date, keywords, sentiment, media type, geography, and outlet.
