Use Keyword Groups to Build More Flexible Monitoring Topics

Create more comprehensive monitoring searches by grouping related keywords within a single Topic.

Keyword Groups let you build more advanced monitoring searches without creating multiple Topics. By grouping related keywords together, you can capture different names, spellings, abbreviations, or related terms while keeping your search organized and easier to maintain.

šŸ”¹ What Are Keyword Groups?

A Keyword Group is a collection of related keywords that Agility treats as interchangeable within a Topic.

Keyword Groups allow you to:

  • Monitor multiple names for the same organization, person, or product.

  • Include abbreviations and alternative spellings.

  • Combine different concepts within a single search.

  • Reduce the number of Topics you need to manage.

Each group uses OR logic internally, while separate groups are combined using AND logic.

For example:

Group 1

  • British Airways

  • British Airlines Association

  • BALPA

Group 2

  • Strike

  • Dispute

  • Walkout

Agility returns mentions containing:

(British Airways OR British Airlines Association OR BALPA)

AND

(Strike OR Dispute OR Walkout)

This captures all relevant combinations without creating multiple Topics.

šŸ”¹ Create a Topic Using Keyword Groups

  1. Open or create a Topic.

  2. Create your first Keyword Group.

  3. Add all related names or variations.

  4. Create additional Keyword Groups for other concepts you want to monitor.

  5. Preview the results.

  6. Save the Topic.

šŸ”¹ When Should I Use Keyword Groups?

Keyword Groups work best when you want to monitor multiple variations of the same concept.

Common examples include:

  • Brand names and abbreviations

  • Executive names and nicknames

  • Product names

  • Campaign names

  • Industry terms

  • Common spelling variations

šŸ”¹ Keyword Groups vs. NOT Keywords

Keyword Groups help you include multiple related search terms.

If you want to exclude certain keywords or phrases, use the NOT field in your Topic instead.

For example, you might monitor:

Apple

while excluding:

fruit

or

recipes

to reduce irrelevant coverage.

šŸ”¹ Excluding Social Media Coverage

If you want to remove social media results from a Topic, don't use Keyword Groups or NOT keywords.

Instead:

  1. Edit your Topic.

  2. Review the selected media types or source settings.

  3. Clear the social network sources you don't want to monitor.

  4. Save your changes.

Keyword Groups are designed to manage search terms—not which content sources are monitored.

šŸ”¹ Best Practices

  • Group different names for the same organization together.

  • Include abbreviations and common alternate spellings.

  • Use separate Keyword Groups for different concepts that should appear together.

  • Use the NOT field only for excluding keywords or phrases.

  • Use Topic source settings—not Keyword Groups—to include or exclude media types such as social networks.

  • Preview your Topic before saving to confirm you're capturing the expected coverage.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between a Keyword Group and the NOT field?

Keyword Groups expand your search by matching multiple related keywords.

The NOT field narrows your search by excluding specific words or phrases.

Can I monitor multiple spellings of a company name?

Yes.

Add each spelling or variation to the same Keyword Group so any version can match.

Can I monitor abbreviations and full names together?

Yes.

For example, a Keyword Group could include:

  • International Business Machines

  • IBM

Either term would satisfy that group.

Can I use Keyword Groups to remove social media mentions?

No.

Keyword Groups only control search terms.

To stop monitoring social media, edit your Topic and remove the relevant social media sources from the Topic settings.
